The short answer: no, you don't have to tip your cleaner in the UK. The price you pay covers the clean. But a tip is a kind way to say thank you when someone has worked hard, especially on a big or messy job.
This guide explains when people usually tip, how much is normal, and other ways to show you're happy with the work.
Is it normal to tip a cleaner in the UK?
Tipping in the UK is much more relaxed than in the US, where adding 15–20% is expected for many services. Here, a tip for a cleaner is a choice, not a rule.
- Many people never tip for their regular clean, and that's completely fine.
- Others give a small tip now and then, when the cleaner has gone the extra mile.
- Lots of people with a regular cleaner give a bigger thank-you at Christmas instead.
When a tip makes sense
You might want to tip when:
- The job was big or very dirty, for example after a party, building work or an illness at home.
- It was a deep clean or an end of tenancy clean, which are hard, physical work.
- Your cleaner did more than you booked, like folding laundry or tackling a job you forgot to mention.
- They fitted you in at short notice, or came in bad weather.
- It's Christmas and they clean for you every week or two.
How much should you tip a cleaner?
There's no fixed amount. These are the amounts many people give:
| Situation | A typical tip |
|---|---|
| One-off normal clean | £3–£5, or about 10% |
| Deep clean or end of tenancy clean | £5–£15 |
| Regular cleaner, at Christmas | About the cost of one clean |
| A team of cleaners | Split it between them |
For example, a 3-hour normal clean with TidyGo costs £54 (3 hours × £18). A 10% tip would be about £5. See our full guide to how much a cleaner costs in London.
If you have a regular cleaner on a cleaning plan, you don't need to tip every visit. A small tip now and then, or a thank-you at Christmas, is plenty.
Cash or card?
Cash is simple, but most of us don't carry it any more, and you might not be home when your cleaner finishes.
With TidyGo, you can leave a tip online on your booking page after the clean, for up to 30 days. 100% of it goes to your cleaner: we don't keep any of it, and we pay the card fee. On team jobs, the tip is shared equally between the cleaners.
Do cleaners pay tax on tips?
Yes. Tips count as income, so cleaners pay Income Tax on them, the same as their other earnings. Since October 2024, UK law also says employers must pass all tips on to their workers without taking a cut. You can read more on GOV.UK's page about tips at work.
Other ways to say thank you
A tip isn't the only way to show you're happy. These cost nothing and mean a lot:
- Leave a good review. Reviews help cleaners get more work. With TidyGo, you can rate your clean on your booking page.
- Book the same cleaner again. Regular work is the best thing you can give a cleaner.
- Get your home ready. Clear surfaces and put things away, so the time goes on cleaning. Here's how to get ready for your cleaner.
- Say thank you. A note or a cup of tea goes a long way.
The bottom line
You never have to tip a cleaner in the UK. If you'd like to, £3–£5 for a normal clean, a bit more for a deep clean, and about one clean's worth at Christmas are all generous amounts. And a good review is always welcome.
